New Record for 100 Meter Run Set By 101 Year Old Louisiana Woman
The generally accepted notion that we must slow down when we get older is completely lost on 101-year old Baton Rouge resident Julia "Hurricane" Hawkins. WBRZ reports that this little firecracker just broke the record for her age group Saturday in the 100-meter race in just over 40 seconds!
The officials at USA Track and Field will take a little time officially verifying the time before it goes down with record books with her other times. That's right, this isn't the Hurricane's only record this summer. After just beginning her track career last year at the State Olympics in Lake Charles, she set running records in her age group for the 50 and 100-meter dash at the National Senior Olympics in Birmingham, Alabama.
How does she stay in shape? According to Julia;
I knew I could do it because I'm in the yard a lot and I keep hearing the phone and come running in to get it."
She also rides her bike everyday and practices the 100-meter dash up and down her street.
Julia is more than full of vim and vigor, she is also the oldest female competitor in USATF history and looks forward to making and breaking many more records.
