Bossier Native Seth Lugo Faces a Career Crossroads: Can He Defy the Odds Again?
The 2024 baseball season was a magical one for former Parkway Panther and Bossier native Seth Lugo. The local baseball star had a career year, finished 2nd in Cy Young voting, and proved that he could be a viable front end starter in the major leagues.
Unfortunately, 2025 wasn't a great year for Seth - especially when compared to a 2024 where he received MVP votes. His season last year was hampered by injury and inconsistency. He had 2 separate IL stints, only made 26 starts, went 8-7 on the year and had an elevated ERA of 4.15.
But, if there's one thing Seth has proven time and again over his career, you can never count him out. Which is a good thing for Royals fans because they're going to need him.
What Can Bossier's Seth Lugo Do To Get Back on Track in 2026?
Like I said at the top, Seth has made a career out of defying the odds. He was a 34th round pick for the Mets in 2011. For those that maybe don't follow the MLB draft as closely as other sports - the Draft was reduced to 20 rounds back in 2020...so if Seth was coming out of college today, he'd probably goes undrafted. So, the fact that he has put a really solid 10+ year career so far is just a testament to his ability to conquer adversity.
LSUS REMAINS PERFECT TO START 2026 SEASON
But as far as bouncing back in 2026, Lugo had a lot to tell fans at a recent Royals Rally. One major thing Seth said he's going to bring into 2026 is more fastballs. "I think over the past couple of years, all the breaking balls that I like to throw, it kind of gave me a reality check -- we’ve got to use your fastball. We’ve got to command the fastball. Get up when I need to. So that’s been my focus.”
Seth threw his fewest amount of fastballs since 2018 last season. So, using that fastball more to make his killer curveball look that much more devastating sounds like a solid plan.
Projections for Seth Lugo's 2026 Season
Seth had a GREAT 2024, making his first All-Star team and finishing 2nd in the Cy Young race. 2025 kinda sucked. So what does 2026 hold in store? Only time will tell. But, according to the Marcel the Monkey Forecasting System - which "uses 3 years of MLB data, with the most recent data weighted heavier. It regresses towards the mean. And it has an age factor." - Seth is in for another down year.
These projections are certainly not fool proof. Although, last year, they weren't too far off Seth's actual performance. The model projected Seth to go 12-11 with 4.25 ERA over 180 innings, he went 8-7 with a 4.15 ERA over 145.1 innings. So, not perfect...but close.
So, this year, the model according to Baseball Reference is projecting Seth to go 9-8 with a 3.82 ERA over 153 innings. Again, the formula weighs age and the previous season heavily...so Seth is getting a little knock for being 36 and suffering multiple injuries in 2025.
But, if the Royals want to reach the post season, they're going to need a bounce back year from Seth Lugo. He doesn't need to be a Cy Young candidate (although I'm sure the Royals would love it), but they're going to need 180+ innings with a sub-4 ERA.
If Seth can do that, it's going to be a good year for him and the Kansas City Royals.
