Spirit filed for bankruptcy to restructure its debt and they are promising the public that it won't affect holiday travel. However, some experts are saying don't count on making it home for the holidays with all the uncertainty with Spirit Airlines. You might be left stranded during the holidays.
Spirit filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday, November 18th. Spirit Airlines filed for Chapter 11 to restructure its debt since the airline has racked up more than $2.2 billion in debt within the past five years. Spirit Airlines joined the bankruptcy list that American, Delta, and United Airlines have already joined. Spirit is the first airline to join the bankruptcy list since 2011.
How Can Spirit's Bankruptcy Ruin Travel for Louisianans?
Chances are Spirit will start trimming its schedule and possibly start canceling some flights leading up to the holidays, they might operate out of fewer airports. Imagine you have your ticket purchased and you are ready to go, all of a sudden you get an alert that your flight has been canceled and the next flight isn't until the next day, or in some cases not for a couple of days.
Experts claim that this bankruptcy can eventually cause fewer routes and less competition among airlines. Less competition is not good for our ticket prices. Less competition means that the price of your ticket can jump dramatically.
Spirit Airlines put out a statement saying all tickets will be honored and encouraged people to continue to book travel via the Spirit Airlines website.
